On May 27th, 1935 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the NIRA was unconstitutional. The National Industrial Recovery Act was considered a policy failure because it was believed to promote industry monopolies and that the act wasn't administered well. The act actually supported union organization which caused significant labor unrest. The act didn't have the sources to handle these problems so Congress passed the National Labor Relations Act. NRA was also passed as unconstitutional.
The PWA (Public Works Administration) budgeted several billion dollars to spend on the construction of bridges, hospitals, airports, dams, and schools and provided employment/improved public welfare. It constructed over 34,000 projects but failed to provide affordable, quality houses and reduce poverty.
After the AAA act was passed, most farmers believed that the government could not tell them what to do. In 1937 this act was ruled unconstitutional. Some think that this act really did help the farmers but some farmers could not really afford the government’s pay because it took away the possible profits that they could have made.
Then in 1938, a new Agricultural Adjustment Act was passed, which gave loans to farmers and stored surplus crops. Once WWII began, the farmers started to focus on producing more crops for the war. In 1942, the Agricultural Adjustment Administration was renamed the Agricultural Adjustment Agency, but its jobs and functions were taken over by the Production and Manufacturing Administration in 1945.
The CWA was suppling 4 million Americans with job, but also costed the government a lot of money. They built and fix many things, such as schools, bridges, buildings, and many more. Although, it was only a temporary organization which was the plan from the start. It began in November 8, 1933 and ended March 1, 1934. Just because the organization itself ended the purpose of it still lives on. The government does their best to supply Americans with a job and equal opportunity.
Overall the National Youth Administration was very successful even though it was not there for too long. It operated from June 26, 1935 to 1943 as part of Works Progress Administration. The NYA helped over 4.5 million young people find work, get vocational training, or afford a better education before the office was closed down in 1943. I really think that NYA really made a difference and it definitely helped a lot of people. By having a lot of projects for the youth to work on such as construction, it gave them a lot of experience and a lot of skills that they could have used in the future.
The Works Progress Administration was very successful. It helped bring back culture and arts in America with is fine arts branch. The Works Progress administration left a long lasting mark. If you look around today you see buildings, bridges, parks, roads and many other things that were built by the WPA. Also, we now have music and art to look back at from the hardest time in America.
It is because of the Works Progress Administration why we have some of the buildings, parks, and stadiums we have today. The WPA actually helped build LaGuardia airport, New York City's very own city airport. It also remodeled some minor league baseball stadiums that we still see and use today. The WPA did have a huge effect on America and helped very much to get the US back on its feet.
The federal housing administration is still around today. It is the largest insurer of mortgages in the world today. Since it began in 1934, it has insured over 34 million properties.
The FDIC and the Emergency Banking Act was created to help reestablish Americans faith in banks. It established that there was no longer a need to fear the possibility of losing all of your savings. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was formed by congress and was meant to insure deposits of up to $5,000. Government inspectors were sent out to observe banks and found that a good majority of US banks were healthy. The FDIC was formed June 16, 1933 but was officially active January 1, 1934. It is still successful today. January 2013, the FDIC began providing deposit insurance that guaranteed the safety of a depositors accounts in banks up to $250,000.
The FHA supplied people, who were mostly poor, with home loans and mortgages in order to afford a house that they can live in. It also supplied jobs for people who were unemployed, and let them build houses. The FHA is still around today supplying people with home loans and mortgages.
The TVA in the 1930s helped to modernize the Tennessee Valley Area as well as help farmers with the production of crops and electricity. The modernization of this region by the TVA helped the people’s life style in the troubling time. The development of the dams however, displaced more than 15,000 families. This created a hate in some rural communities for the TVA. Many local landowners started to become suspicious of this agency, but TVA successfully introduced new agricultural methods into farming communities. However, even though TVA has lasted and is still around today, the TVA carries 25 billion dollars in debt which is nearing the 30 billion dollar debt limit imposed by congress. The TVA must now retire 18 of its 59 coal-fired units by 2017.
The NYA had a positive effect on American youth during the depression. It gave them a chance to stay off the streets so they could live a happier life. Even if their parents were not ambitious they could turned their life around and learn how to become successful adults. The NYA was necessary so that kids could become more skilled and complete their jobs more effectively.
On May 18, 1933, Congress passed the TVA Act. It was established to address a wide range of environmental, economic, and technological issues, including the delivery of low-cost electricity and the management of natural resources. Initially, federal appropriations funded all TVA operations. Appropriations for the TVA power program ended in 1959, and appropriations for TVA’s environmental stewardship and economic development activities died out by 1999.
Under the Tennessee Valley Authority Act of 1933, the Federal Government provided electric power to States, counties, municipalities and nonprofit cooperatives. It was a part of the Federal initiatives to provide navigation, flood control, strategic materials for national defense, electric power, relief of unemployment and improvement of living conditions in rural areas.
The Social Security Act was passed in 1935 and set aside money for people from their paychecks, which they would receive when they retire.
